Your Social Media Preferences: All-in-one or to each their own?

With Twitter in talks about buying the highly popular TweetDeck (read the WSJ story here), a third party client used to post messages on Twitter as well as following other services including: Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Google Buzz, and Foursquare, I was wondering…what would happen in Twitter’s hands? Would TweetDeck become Twitter only? Do you use TweetDeck to access only Twitter or other networks as well? Do you prefer an all-in-one service like TweetDeck or it’s competitors, Hootsuite and CoTweet, or new social CRMs like Nimble (which I have yet to try, but have heard good things about) or do you visit each separately? Do you push the same message to all networks?

Personally, I use TweetDeck to monitor Twitter and follow various hashtags and their related discussions and prefer to use other networks individually as each has their own distinct tone.

Twitter tends to be open to just about everyone with knowledge sharing, seeking and spreading news, and connections to people you know and people you don’t know who share your interests, which if it’s a business account includes clients, non-clients, and potential clients who’ve heard about you and are perhaps seeing what you are about first, or are just not ready to move forward yet. It also perhaps includes you following people who are your clients or who are thought leaders in your area of business. You tend to ask questions and tweet about your business, but interact with your followers one-on-one.

Facebook, when used personally, tends to only be those people we know personally and are not in a business relationship with. It isn’t open to everyone just in case Mom decides to post that embarrassing photo from when you were 3 years old for everyone to see (Thanks, Mom). When used as a business account, you tend to just have people you know (or who know your business) but you engage on a different level with many people at once with polls, contests, their comments and likes and photos all in one place for everyone to see. On a higher level, it’s all about gaining a person’s interaction with your business and sharing with their friends.

LinkedIn tends to have two camps. Those who interact with only those they know who can say, “Yes, I know them and can recommend them.” or people who connect to anyone who asks in order to interact with as many people as possible. With LinkedIn the interaction is strictly business and showing how much you know about your field and perhaps how others could benefit from doing business with you. You share blog posts, slides, and join groups of like minded professionals for discussions.

With these different tones – anyone (Twitter), clients/consumers (Facebook), business (LinkedIn) why would you post the same thing to everyone? Some overlap, such sharing as blog posts, is fine but when you say the same thing everywhere all at once, your engagement becomes ungenuine or fake. Followers on Twitter who are also on Facebook or LinkedIn will start to see it as posting and running and not as wanting to cultivate a real relationship.
